How to make Packeteer/Packetshaper 10000 from standby to active Packeteer/Packetshaper is a network appliance mainly focus on 'Application Traffic

Packeteer/Packetshaper is a network appliance mainly focus on 'Application Traffic Management' and optimization for wide area networks (WAN). In addition, IT can optimize application performance by using granular quality of service (QoS) controls to regulate traffic and increase WAN capacity through application-specific compression techniques. Packetshaper appliances are currently owned by 'Blue Coat Systems'.

In data center we will use normally redundant devices in order to gain redundancy. Here one of the device will act as an active device and the other will be on standby. If we want to toggle between the two, the process is a bit difficult. We need to remove the 'Jumpers' from the standby device to make it as active. For this we need to open the packeteer device from the bottom. Please see the attached pictures for getting more clearance on the operation.

NOTE: Here we are discussing on Packeteer 10000 model, we can do the same process on other models through a slight difference. Overall the process will be same.

Models of packeteer/packetshaper (most popular):

• PacketShaper 8500
• PacketSeeker 8500
• PacketShaper 8500/ISP
• PacketShaper 9500
• PacketSeeker 9500
• PacketShaper 9500/ISP
• PacketShaper 10000
• PacketSeeker 10000
• PacketShaper 10000/ISP

Activity Procedure:

Please note the below few points before doing the activity.

1. Disconnect the system from any connected links,
networks, or modems, and then turn off the system power
source.

WARNING: Failure to do so before you open the
system or do any procedures can result in personal injury or
equipment damage.

2. Ground yourself.

WARNING: Make clear the personnel safety.

3. Remove the rack mount ears (if present) from the
model, and then remove the screws from the back of the unit (Refer: Pic1).

4. Remove the unit cover.

5. Remove the screws from the side door, then remove the door (Refer: Pic2)

NOTE: Please remember that the reference picture side is only present in the above prescribed models of Packeteer (i.e. 10000). All other models won't have this small unit of side door. Also the above figure shows the side door removal before removing the whole upper cover, its understandable that before removing the side door we can't able to remove the upper cover as it will already bended with screws.

Once you open the upper panel (cover) of the model, now it's the time for look out of 'Jumpers'. Don't get panic if the jumpers was not there in place on the first slot, it may be removed by others (or not present) for standby/active purpose before your activity.

6. See the figure (Refer: Pic3) for getting an idea on jumpers. It will be on black color. Maximum 9 jumpers will be present inside the device.

7. Remove the 9 jumpers carefully from the pins without shortening or bending the legs of the jumpers. Prefer to use a needle edge screw driver to do your activity. Take outmost care while removing the jumpers.

NOTE: There may a chance of present a daughter slot board near to the main board, we should remove that slot (as it will be fixed as in top down in Packeteer 8000/10000 models). Carefully remove the upper cover of the daughter board slot, and drag the card along the side door that we already open. Find the jumpers exactly on the same place as in the figure (Refer Pic4). The only difference is that the daughter board will be fixed in top down pose near the main board slot.

8. After successfully removed all jumpers we can close the box with all the screws provided (remember to close the side doors). And eventually fix the module on the rack, if it's needed. And finally do not discard the jumpers; you will have to replace them if you later wish to the standby function.

Hope this would be useful..!
